The Windows AutoPlay feature allows a computer to automatically run a program or video on a CD or DVD that is inserted into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive in the computer. If AutoPlay is disabled, no actions are taken with a CD or DVD until you tell the computer what to do with the CD or DVD.

Orginal title: autorun does not work on my windows 7 when i put a CD or DVD in it, please help. I tried updating the CDrom driver but it still didn't work please help. (The reason why it won't work is becasuse on Windows 7, the only keys available in the autorun section of autorun.inf are label and icon (except for on DRIVECDROM drives). Any other keys in this section will be ignored. Thus only CD and DVD media types can specify an AutoRun task (or affect double-click and right-click behavior).

By default, Autoplay is enabled in Windows, but it may have been disabled by a user or by a computer virus. To enable or disable the Windows AutoPlay feature, follow the appropriate steps below.

Disable Microsoft Windows AutoPlay

Tip

You can temporarily disable the AutoPlay feature by holding down the left Shift key as the CD begins to run. Also, to browse the contents of the CD, open My Computer, right-click the CD-ROM drive, and choose Explore.

If you want to permanently disable the AutoPlay feature, follow the steps below for your version of Microsoft Windows.

Disable AutoPlay in Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10

1. Open the Windows Registry Editor.
2. In the Registry Editor, open the below registry key:

1. Download and install TweakUI.
2. From the TweakUI interface, click the + next to My Computer
3. Click the + next to AutoPlay
4. Select Drives and uncheck each drive you want to disable AutoPlay on.

Disable AutoPlay in Windows 95, 98, and ME

1. Click the + next to CD-ROM and double-click the currently installed CD-ROM drive.
2. In the CD-ROM properties, click the Settings tab and verify that there is not a check in the Auto Insert Notification section.

Disable AutoPlay on audio CDs only.

1. Click Start, Programs, Windows Explorer
2. In Windows Explorer, click View, then click Folder Options.
3. Click the File types tab and locate ' CD Audio Track' category in the list of available file types.
4. Highlight ' CD Audio Track' and click Edit or Advanced.
5. In the Actions category, change the default from Play to Open or None.

Disable AutoPlay by editing the Windows registry.

If the My Autorun or AutoPlay feature still does not work after following the above recommendations and you are running Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98, try the below solution.

Before editing or changing anything in the Microsoft Windows registry, it's recommended that you backup the registry. We also highly recommend that anyone new to the registry become familiar with all the Windows registry basics.

In Regedit, navigate into the below folders.

Once in the Explorer folder, double-click the entry NoDriveTypeAutoRun if present and change the value to '95 00 00 00'.

If NoDriveTypeAutoRun is not present, follow the steps below.

1. Click Edit from the drop-down menu.
2. Click New.
3. Click Binary value.
4. Enter 'NoDriveTypeAutoRun' as the name.
5. Enter '95 00 00 00' as the value.

Once the above is completed, exit Regedit and reboot the computer. Autoplay should now be disabled.

Disable AutoPlay of audio CDs in Windows NT and 2000

Before attempting the instructions below, ensure the CD that may not be AutoPlaying is capable of doing this. Not all CDs are capable of being auto played. CDs for Microsoft Windows that are AutoPlay data CD's have an 'autorun.inf' file in the root directory of the CD.

Disable AutoPlay for Audio CDs only.

1. Click Start, Programs, Windows Explorer
2. In Windows Explorer, click View and then Folder Options.
3. Click the File types tab and locate 'CD Audio Track' category in the list of available file types.
4. Highlight 'CD Audio Track' and click Edit or Advanced.
5. In the Actions category double-click the option listed Play; if this is not listed, see the next paragraph.
6. If you want to use the default Windows CD player, ensure that in the 'Application used to perform the action' section is 'c:windowscdplayer.exe -play'.
7. Once set, make sure this action is the Default.

If Play was not an option listed when following the above steps, in the 'Edit File type' window click New. After that, type Play for the action type, then under 'application used to perform this action' type c:windowscdplayer.exe -play.

Note

The above steps are for setting audio CDs to be played with the default Microsoft Windows CD player. If you have a different CD player, you need to edit the play to point to the program you want to play your CDs.

Enabling AutoPlay in Windows NT and 2000

When you insert a removable device such as a CD, DVD, or memory card into your computer, you’ll often see Windows’ “AutoPlay” popup. AutoPlay detects the kind of disc or media you have inserted and automatically takes whatever action you request. But if you find the feature annoying, you can disable AutoPlay very simply in Windows 10.

Enable or Disable AutoPlay in Settings

Open the “Settings” app, and click on the “Devices” icon.

Click on “AutoPlay” on the left side, and switch on/off “Use AutoPlay for all media and devices.” With this switched off, you will never see the AutoPlay window pop up.

However, you can also leave AutoPlay on, and customize how it works. Under “Choose AutoPlay Defaults”, select the default action you want AutoPlay to perform when you connect each type of media or device. It could be a flash drive, memory card, or your smartphone. You can also press and hold the Shift key when you insert a device to open an AutoPlay notification, regardless of the default setting.

Windows 10’s “Settings” app lets you configure AutoPlay for some types of media but not others. If you want finer control over devices like audio CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, or SuperVideo, you might want to edit AutoPlay settings from the Control Panel instead.

Open the Control Panel, and from the “icons view”, click the “AutoPlay” icon. Xilisoft video converter standard license code.

Check (or uncheck) the the “Use AutoPlay for all media and devices” box to turn AutoPlay on or off. If you want it on, select the default action for each type of media and device listed below it. At the bottom of this page is a “Reset all defaults” button to return all the settings to their default state.

How To Set Autorun Cd In Windows 7

The AutoPlay window looks almost identical in Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. In Windows 7, you have a list with all the types of media for which you can set the AutoPlay behavior. In Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, you have the same list, but with a few more types of media available for configuration. For example, you can set AutoPlay behavior for removable drives and camera storage, while Windows 7 doesn’t include these type of media.

Disable AutoPlay Using the Group Policy Editor

Most people can disable AutoPlay from the Settings or Control Panel, and they won’t need any further options. However, if you have Windows 10 Pro and want to disable AutoPlay for multiple users on the same computer, you can disable it through the Group Policy Editor.

Press “Win + R” to open the Run box and type “gpedit.msc.” Under “Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components”, click “AutoPlay Policies”.

In the right-hand side details pane, double click “Turn off AutoPlay” to open the Properties box. Click “Enabled,” and then select “All drives” in the “Turn off AutoPlay” on box to disable AutoPlay on all drives or choose choose “CD-ROM and removable media drives” to disable AutoPlay on these medias.

Turning off AutoPlay is incredibly easy, but if you take the time to configure it, it can be a pretty helpful feature. Note, however, that the most secure option is to set AutoPlay set to “Ask me everytime” if you prefer to keep AutoPlay enabled. This way nothing will automatically open. But if you trust everything you plug into your computer, AutoPlay can be quite convenient.
